MDF PIECE

This is the MDF base piece obtained from ROLAND to be thermoformed.

Thermoformed cars

These are the three different thermoformed car models we used to make surveys in order to choose the best one that matches with our parameters:

  • City car
  • Elegant and sophisticated
  • Cabriolet
  • Modern
  • For women

Last session was about obtaining a plastic piece in order to have a physical sample of the final car and test people about it.

Once we had our MDF car from the roland printer, we finished it and spread it with soap before using the thermoformer. We had to take care of every detail in the MDF piece because the melted PET would be a copy of it and sometimes you cant get specific lines and foldings, so we have to choose a determined thikness of PET and calculate the temperature of melting.

Then we have to cut the rest of PET and get the piece in order to mask it and paint it like the render we made before.

Having the three cars ready we aked people about some characteristics of the car so we could have an idea of the best car to be made in the z-print.

25/03/09 class

  • Last class we went upstairs to the rapid prototyping lab where Raul show us how to use the Z-corp printer.
  • It is a machine that works with to principal elements, glue and dust; and it is connected to a computer from which it receives information to be printed.
  • We have a 3d model that is cut in many layers horizontally in the computer and then the printer works layer by layer, dust-glue-dust-glue... until the object is done.
  • Once the printer has finished we have to wait 30 min and then take the object with a special tool and put it into a chamber where a vacuum cleaner is going to absorve all the extra dust.
  • Then, as it is a fragil piece, we have to be careful, but in order to make it hard we have to add a mixture of resine and hardenner with a brush and let it dry, then the object is ready.

04 mar CLASS COMMENT

Last class we learned how to use the Roland model printer, we went upstairs to the lab in order to be teached. Roland is a printer that can work with different materials such as MDF or acrylics, etc. The first step is to place your material on the surface and hold it in order to locate the taller part with the sensor and the center. Then you have to make a conection between the computer and the machine. We have to be sure to close the door, if we dont do it the machine wouldn't start working. The files have to be .stl so the Roland modeling program can read them.
